07/09/01 Eileen Woo and Gowan Tervo also receive HHMI Predoctoral Fellowship

Eileen has received the fellowship in Structural Biology and Biochemistry while Gowan in Neuroscience and Physiology. For the complete list of recipients, click here 

05/08/01 Michelle receives HHMI predoctoral fellowship

Michelle Aaron received the HHMI 2001 predoctoral fellowship in Microbiology, one of the most respected and competitive graduate fellowships ever. Michelle will start graduate school at Yale University this Fall. Congratulations Michelle!! 411

 

05/08/01 Doug goes to Cornell Med-School!!

Doug Weinstein finally decided to accept Cornell Medical School's offer. It took him some time to make up his mind but he finally did. Cornell happened to be his top choice from the beginning. Doug has recently graduated from Duke University. Good luck Doug and Congratulations! 411 

 

22/07/01Despina is on her way to MD/Ph.D.

Despina Siolas has been accepted to the NIH MSTP (MD/PhD) program at  Stony Brook. This means she gets her MD from Stony Brook and her Ph.D from Cold Spring Harbor. Despina started her first rotation this summer. Congratulations Despina and Good Luck!! 411

 

22/07/01Chuck helps install Rutgers-Newark telescope.

Chuck took the lead of the telescope installment project 2 years ago under the supervision of Dr. Earl Shaw. The telescope is used by students, faculty as well as scientists from the Newark Museum planetarium. Chuck has recently been accepted to the Watson School of Biological Sciences at CSHL. 411 For more details

 

  1/06/01David goes to University of Illinois.

David (aka Mormo) has been accepted to U. Illinios' graduate program in Microbiology. He'll be starting next fall. Congratulations Dave and good luck. 411

 

27/4/2001 Abdullah goes to Texas.

Abdullah has been accepted to UTSW’s graduate program, he starts in August. What’s interesting is that 6 of his colleagues, also graduating this semester from Bilkent University, were also accepted to the same program. Abdullah is interested in Cancer and Apoptosis. Congratulations Turkish Delight. 411

 

27/4/2001 Michelle Aaron off to Yale.

Yale University will be lighting with Michelle’s smile next fall as she starts her graduate studies there. Daniela Cohen is still an undergraduate at Yale, and will probably be doing a Neuro summer program there. Congratulations Michelle. 411

 

  27/4/2001 CSHL releases Memory Board.

If you go to CSHL’s website you can log onto its Memory Board, and share with everyone special moments you spent there. There is an independent category for URPs. 411

 

 

13/04/2001 Natalia and Michael "SURF" at Caltech.

Natalia and Mike have been awarded the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at Caltech. Nati will be working with Gilles Laurent on olfaction (again, but this time with locusts), while Mike will work with Christof Koch. Good luck to both of you. 411

12/04/2001 Gowan joins Chuck and goes back to CSHL!!!

Gowan (aka Dougal) has been accepted to the Watson School of Biological Sciences. It took him quite some time to decide between it and Harvard. Gowan's interests span through physiology, philosophy, and psychology, but I could never understand neither his, nor Zach Mainen's taste in movies.    Congratulations Gowan! 411

 

  3/4/2001 Fu and Doug share Blue Devil Pride

 Duke Blue Devils'  won the 2001 NCAA Basketball Championship. It came after the Blue Devils' 82-72 victory over Arizona in Minneapolis on Monday night. The picture shows the Bonfire. Now Doug can go off to Med School with a National Championship under his belt. 411

 

28/3/2001 Chuck makes it back to CSHL!!!!!!!

Charles Kopec has been accepted to the Watson School of Biological Sciences at CSHL. To get an idea of who Chuck is, read his "An URP's day at CSHL" Chuck is the 5th URP to enter the WSBS after Elizabeth Thomas (URP97), Masafumi Muratani (URP98), Marco Mangone, and Rebecca Ewald (URP99). Congratulations Chuck.... from the heart! 411

 

 

26/3/2001Eileen and Kevin receive NSF awards and head off to UCSF

        Eileen Woo and Kevin Vogeli both received the prestigious NSF  Graduate Fellowship Awards for Fiscal Year 2001. They both have been accepted to UCSF where they will join other previous URPs like Michael Verzi and Pinar Ercyias (URP99). Good luck to both of you! Michael Verzi also received the same award this year. 411 *thanks Fred for the alert!

8/3/2001 Joan and Trevor off to Med-School

         Joan Hu has been accepted to Harvard's Med-School and will start this Fall. Trevor Yeung will be going to Cambridge's Med-School (UK). Trevor has been the President of the Cambridge University Medical Society last year. Good luck to you both! 411

2/2/2001 Ahmed wins first place and receives L.E.2500 

Ahmed won first place in a contest organized by an Arab scientific journal for his article on Apoptosis "Dying to live". The contest was Arab-world-wide and his article will be published in March. Reprints will be available...... but in Arabic. 411 
 

Michael Hengartner leaves CSHL

Michael Hengartner, Director of the URP will leave CSHL this Spring. He has accepted a new position as Professor at The Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Zurich University, Switzerland, his homeland. Michael joined CSHL in 1994 and had 7 URPs ever since.  Good luck Michael!! 411
 

Leemor becomes the new URP director 

Leemor Joshua-Tor is now the new URP director. Leemor's directorship of the program came after Arthur Chovnick, H. Edwin Umbarger, John Cairns, Rudolf Werner, Winship Herr, and Michael Hengartner. Congratulations to Leemor and to the URP! Leemor has had 3 URPs till now. 411
